Trethorne Golf Club:-
| | The Captain of Trethorne Golf Club writes... | The Captain, Andrew Dance, seen here with Bob at Trethorne on commencement of his charity drive(!)
January 2008 | My charity this year is the Robert Johns Leukaemia Fund and is a local charity which was started in 1983 by Bob Johns, in memory of his son Robert who died after fighting the disease for five long years. Robert was only 11 years old when he died. This year is the 25th anniversary of the charity and I hope that as many of you as possible will help me to raise as much money as we can towards it.
In this respect can I bring to your attention the lake on the eighth hole which has now been dubbed ‘Captain Pugwash’s’ lake for 2008, and to the fact it will cost you all 50p for each golf ball you send swimming in it. It is voluntary but it’s for a great cause so please put your money in the bottle which is on the bar in the Clubhouse.

| The Captain's charity for 2008, chosen by Andrew Dance, was the Robert Johns Leukaemia Fund and was a resounding success.
Andrew is seen here [right] presenting Bob with a cheque for £4,606.38; money raised by a variety of means, from 'charging' 50p per ball that was directed into Captain Pugwash's lake to a general donation bottle on the clubhouse bar - this alone raised in excess of £1,000.
The Captain's Charity Day, held on 30th August 2008, saw many mens and ladies teams competing, concluding with an evening Charity Auction. Goods included many signed footballers' shirts and a signed rugby photograph, all of which were presented to the winning bidders by Bob.
Several visiting players on different competition days donated their winnings to the Captain's fund.
Bob is not often speechless but was so elated to receive such a tremendous amount and wishes to thank Andrew, the club and all contributing players for this overwhelming gesture of kindness. |
